The opportunities

The Italian government offers merit-based scholarships to international students who wish to study in Italy. International students must have an undergraduate or graduate degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 and should be enrolled as full-time or part-time (50%) doctoral candidates. Students wishing to enroll in master’s degree programs should have a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.2 and should be enrolled as full-time doctoral candidates.

The application procedure

Students must have Italian residence. To obtain an Italian citizenship or a permanent residency permit, you must be enrolled in full-time higher education degree studies at any of Italy’s state-recognized universities.

The selection process

The scholarship application is based on merit, that is assessed by using written tests and personal interviews, which take place in Italy or in some other country of your choice. The selection process takes place twice a year: during January and June.

The eligibility period

The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, based on academic merit and contribution to society. Applicants must be nationals of countries outside of Italy and must have attained an undergraduate degree (minimum 3 years in duration) by 18th September 2022.

The scholarship supports Masters and PhD programmes (not available in all fields) The maximum period of study is 24 months, or 36 months in specific cases. The scholarship covers tuition fees (full amount), monthly allowance, travel expenses, accommodation and some related costs. The scholarships are targeted to high-achieving individuals who are committed to using their education to make a positive impact on society. The applicants must be non-EU citizens and Italian language is required at an intermediate level (CEFR Level B2).

How much does it cost?

€1,200 per year (€250 per month) It covers tuition fees and gives you a monthly allowance. In addition, EU/EEA students can apply for travel grants to cover additional living expenses. It’s worth noting that not all universities accept scholarships so be sure to do your research before applying! Our Verona campus offers a scholarship programme too: just €500 per year (or less than €25 a month!) but still includes free tuition fees and allowances plus travel grants.

Where can I study?

The Italian government gives a limited number of scholarships to non-EU foreign nationals who are interested in pursuing their degree in Italy. The awards cover both, tuition fees and living expenses. Students can choose to study in any Italian university or college, as long as it is public and accredited by national authorities.

What can I study in the Italian Government Scholarships?

Business, Engineering, Science and Technology, Pharmacy and Medicine are some of the most popular Italian degrees. There are some Italian Government scholarships available for foreign students who want to undertake a bachelor’s degree in Italy. If you’re interested in studying Law or Economics then you should be aware that there aren’t any available scholarships.
